The role of the starter in the vehicle
The automotive starter is a key component of the engine cranking system, responsible for starting the vehicle. It is an electrical device that converts electrical energy from the battery into the mechanical energy required to crank the engine. The key component of the starter is an electric motor fitted with a one-way clutch. When the car is started, the starter motor rotates the crankshaft of the engine, giving it speed. The electrical energy from the battery is converted into mechanical energy, allowing the engine to run autonomously.
There are mainly electric starters on the market, which are the most common in modern vehicles. However, it is also possible to find internal combustion starters and pneumatic starters, which are used in specific applications.

Starter operating principle
When the key is turned to the start position, the clutch unit (electromagnet) simultaneously:
- Couples the main positive pole coming from the battery to the positive pole of the starter motor, thus starting the engine – the rotor begins to rotate.
- Couples the starter rotor to the engine flywheel via a gear (Bendix). When the rotor is coupled to the flywheel, the vehicle’s internal combustion engine is turned by the electric starter motor.

Starter remanufacturing standards
- Mounting threads – improved or replaced with new threads to facilitate correct vehicle installation
- Solenoid switch – disassembled, components cleaned, contacts and springs checked and replaced if necessary. Electromagnet – checked and cleaned
- Brush-holder – brushes and springs checked and replaced if necessary
- Rotor – cleaned and polished. Commutator – rolled and polished or replaced with new.
- Bendix – disassembled and cleaned. Rolls and springs replaced as necessary.
- Slide sleeves – checked and replaced as necessary.
