Electric steering pumps

What does the electric pump do?
The electro-hydraulic power steering pump (EHPS) is a modern solution that replaces the traditional mechanical hydraulic pump driven by an internal combustion engine. Unlike its older counterpart, the EHPS pump operates independently of engine speed, meaning it can deliver the correct hydraulic pressure at all times, regardless of the vehicle’s operating conditions.
Construction of an electric pump
The EHPS pump consists of an electric motor, control module, hydraulic pump, fluid tank and pressure pipes. The electric motor drives the hydraulic pump, which generates the hydraulic fluid pressure required for the power steering system.

How does the electric pump work?
It works by generating hydraulic pressure to help the driver manoeuvre the steering wheel, reducing the force required to turn.
The most common faults of the electric pump
- Failure of the electric motor.
- Leak in the pressure pipes or fluid tank.
- Failure of the control module or pressure sensors.

How is the electric pump remanufactured?
In most cases, the electric motor and control module are remanufactured. The pressure pipes and fluid tank are usually replaced with new ones if they are leaking. Repairs may also include cleaning or replacing the hydraulic pump.
